Starlink on Your Phone: T-Satellite Today, Starlink Mobile Next

In short

Today, Starlink reaches ordinary phones in the US only through T-Mobile's T-Satellite: texts, picture messages, location sharing, text to 911 and a list of apps, for $10/month (included with Experience Beyond, open to AT&T and Verizon customers with an unlocked phone and a free eSIM). A standalone Starlink Mobile carrier is reported but not launched: on October 22, 2026, Bloomberg said SpaceX was negotiating access to at least 80,000 US cell sites. Nothing is signed. Checked October 29, 2026.

Who is your mobile carrier?

Two different things called “Starlink on your phone”

The headlines mix up a service you can buy today with a carrier that does not exist yet. Here is the split, as of October 29, 2026:

What T-Satellite actually does today

T-Mobile's support page lists, in its own words, text messaging (including texts to 911), location sharing, picture and audio messaging, select apps and satellite data. In practice:

  • No setup, no pointing. When there is no tower or roaming network, the phone switches to the satellite on its own. You'll see “T-Sat+Starlink” or “T-Mobile SpaceX” as the network name.
  • Outdoors only. It may not work inside buildings, on planes or cruise ships, under heavy tree cover or in deep canyons.
  • Slow by design. Messages can take longer to send; the phone keeps retrying until it succeeds or tells you it failed.
  • Apps, not the open web. Satellite data is limited to apps that have been optimized for it (maps, weather, trail and messaging apps such as WhatsApp have been reported). Treat it as a lifeline, not a browser.
  • Abroad: T-Mobile lists partner coverage in Canada (Rogers), Australia (Telstra), New Zealand (One NZ) and Japan (KDDI; no text to 911 there).

Who can get it

  • T-Mobile Experience Beyond: included.
  • Other T-Mobile plans: add it under “Manage Add-Ons” for $10/month.
  • AT&T, Verizon and other carriers: $10/month with an unlocked, satellite-optimized phone that has a free eSIM. Some Android phones only hold one eSIM next to a physical SIM, so your main line may have to move to the physical SIM first.
  • iPhone 14 and later already have Apple's own satellite emergency features; T-Satellite adds messaging to anyone, not just 911.

What the 80,000-tower story means

Bloomberg reported on October 22, 2026 that SpaceX is seeking access to at least 80,000 US cell sites, roughly half of the country's purpose-built towers, with Crown Castle among the companies in talks. Combined with low-band 800 MHz spectrum SpaceX agreed to buy the same month, that is the outline of a fourth national carrier. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile shares fell about 4 to 5% in extended trading on the report.

Three things to keep in mind before you change anything:

  1. Nothing is signed. SpaceX and the tower companies have not confirmed any deal.
  2. It is years away. Musk has spoken of two to three years; Verizon's CEO argues four to six and hundreds of billions of dollars.
  3. There is no price. Any “Starlink Mobile plan” offered to you today is not from SpaceX.

We will update this page when SpaceX announces plans or pricing.

Phone satellite vs a Starlink dish

Direct-to-cell is the safety net; the dish is the internet. If you need video calls, streaming or remote work at a cabin, in an RV or during a long outage, you still want a dish: the Starlink Mini kit runs from $199 and a Roam 100 GB plan is $55/month (prices checked October 26, 2026). Start with Mini vs Standard and Roam vs Residential.

The strongest backup setup pairs both: your phone for emergency texts anywhere, and a dish plus a 5G router that fails over automatically when one link drops. Size the battery with our Mini battery calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Starlink on my phone right now?

In the US, yes, through T-Mobile's T-Satellite. It covers texting, picture and audio messages, location sharing, text to 911, satellite data for selected apps, and it works outdoors with a clear view of the sky. It is not a replacement for normal cell service or home internet.

How much does T-Satellite cost?

It is included with T-Mobile's Experience Beyond plan. Other T-Mobile customers and non-T-Mobile customers can add it for $10 per month, according to T-Mobile's support page checked on October 29, 2026.

Do I need to switch to T-Mobile?

No. AT&T, Verizon and other customers can add T-Satellite as a second line on an eSIM, as long as the phone is unlocked and satellite-optimized. Your main carrier stays the default for calls and texts.

What is Starlink Mobile?

It is SpaceX's planned phone service. SpaceX has said it wants to sell mobile service directly to US consumers, bought low-band 800 MHz spectrum in October 2026 and, per Bloomberg, is negotiating for at least 80,000 cell sites. There is no launch date, no plan and no price yet.

Can I make phone calls over Starlink satellites?

Not as regular phone calls today. T-Satellite supports messaging and data for selected apps; several reports say WhatsApp voice and video work over satellite data, but performance varies and messages can be delayed.

Does Starlink on a phone replace a Starlink dish?

No. Direct-to-cell satellites carry a thin connection meant for messaging and light apps. For video calls, streaming or working remotely you still need a dish such as the Starlink Mini or Standard.
