Starlink Standby Mode: $10/mo vs Cancel — Which Is Cheaper?
What Standby Mode costs in the US, what you keep while paused, and how to decide between Standby, pausing and cancelling.

In short
Starlink used to let you pause service for free. In August 2025 that free pause became Standby Mode, a paid parking state that keeps your service line alive between uses. If the dish spends half the year in a storage bay, this one setting is worth more than any plan comparison: it's the difference between paying for a plan in January and paying ten bucks.
What Standby Mode costs
On starlink.com, Standby is described only as “a small monthly fee”. The US price reported since June 2026 is $10 per month, up from $5 when it launched. We last checked on October 26, 2026. Starlink changes prices often, so the amount shown in your account at the moment you switch is the one that counts.
What still works while on Standby
Starlink only promises two things while you're parked:
- Emergency messaging. A minimal connection that lets you reach help when nothing else works. It is not meant for browsing, streaming or video calls.
- Easy reactivation, even in dead zones. Because the dish keeps a live link, you can switch back to full service from the app wherever you are. That's useful when you arrive at a campsite with no cell signal and need to turn Starlink back on.
What you don't get is normal internet access. Treat Standby as a “parked” state, not a cheap slow plan.
Standby vs keeping a plan vs cancelling
| Option | Monthly cost | What you keep |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Roam 100 GB | $55 | Full internet with a high-speed allotment |
| Standby Mode | $10 | Emergency messaging, easy reactivation |
| Cancel | $0 | Nothing. You restart service from scratch later |
When Standby saves money
The math is simple: every month you won't use the dish, Standby costs $10 instead of a full plan. For a seasonal traveler on Roam 300 GB, here is what a year looks like:
| Pattern | 12-month service cost |
|---|---|
| Roam 300 GB every month | $960 |
| Roam 300 GB 6 months + Standby 6 months | $540 |
| Roam 300 GB 3 months + Standby 9 months | $330 |
| Roam Unlimited 4 months + Standby 8 months | $780 |

Who should use Standby
- Seasonal RVers and campers who travel a few months a year. See Starlink for RV life.
- Cabin and second-home owners who only need internet during visits.
- Backup users who keep Starlink for storms and outages and want to switch on within minutes.
- Boaters who use the dish only during the sailing season.
Use the dish most weeks? Skip Standby. You'd reactivate nearly every month and gain nothing.
How to switch without surprises
- Open your Starlink account or the app and look at the current billing date.
- Switch to Standby before the next billing period starts. Billing runs in one-month increments.
- Note the Standby fee shown in your account; that is your real price.
- When you need full service again, reactivate from the app. In remote spots, do it before you lose cell coverage if you can.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Starlink Standby Mode cost?
Starlink describes it as "a small monthly fee". The US figure reported since June 2026 is $10 per month, up from $5. Check your account for the exact amount on your plan.
Can I browse the internet in Standby Mode?
Standby Mode is not a regular internet plan. Starlink describes it as keeping emergency messaging available and making reactivation easy. Plan on reactivating full service whenever you need to work, stream or browse normally.
How is Standby billed?
Starlink bills service in one-month increments. Look at your billing date in the account before you switch, so you know which month the change applies to.
Is Standby cheaper than cancelling?
Cancelling stops the monthly fee entirely, but you lose the active service line and the ability to reactivate in a few taps. If you expect to use the dish again within months, Standby is usually the simpler option.
Does Standby Mode work on Residential plans?
Starlink promotes Standby Mode mainly with Roam ("Pause anytime with Standby Mode"). Availability and conditions can vary by plan, so check the options shown in your Starlink account.
